Rekha and Kamala's remedy
Rekha’s remedy: For flu, common cold, cough, seasonal allergies and respiratory conditions, including asthma. Mix half a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice, one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, one tablespoon of honey and take three times a day.
Kamala’s remedy: For stomach ache, put one inch of fresh, shredded ginger root into a cup of hot water and infuse for a few minutes and then drink.
Origin: The tropical rainforests from the Indian subcontinent to Southern Asia. One of the first spices exported from the Orient, ginger arrived in Europe with the spice trade. Ginger was first used by the Indians and the Ancient Chinese during 5th Century BC.
History, myths and legends: Its warming and energising properties were mentioned in the writings of Confucius as early as 500 BC and in Chinese and Indian medical texts written over 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks and Romans also used ginger.
Remedies: It was traditionally used to warm the stomach and dispel chills. Drinking ginger tea regularly effectively helps treat pain associated with gout, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
