My Spice Box

Christella and Susie’s remedy

Christella’s remedy: I like to make chicken and goji berry soup. You prepare the soup and then add the fresh goji berries and cook for 5 minutes and serve.

Susie’s remedy: To treat sticky eye, place eight to ten goji berries in a cup and add hot water, infuse for a few minutes and then drink.

Origin:China and Tibet. Cultivated across China, India and Nepal.

History, myths and legends: The benefits of goji berries were documented in a book called Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, written by the Chinese emperor Shen Nong in the year 250 AD, believed to be the oldest Chinese book on herbs and medicines. The goji berry plant Lycium Barbarum was introduced to the UK in the 1730s by the Duke of Argyll, but was used mostly for hedges and decorative gardening.

Remedies: Goji berries are high in minerals and vitamins. They strengthen the kidneys and balance the body. They enhance the immune system, protect the liver, improve eyesight and circulation. They are loaded with beta-carotene which helps promote healthy skin.

Please note: It is advisable to check with your Doctor before taking any home remedies
