Kokila and Shirmala’s remedy

Kokila’s remedy: To help control diabetes, take 50g of mint, ginger, pomegranate and 25g of garlic, all fresh, blend into a paste and take one teaspoon, three times a day with food.

Shirmala’s remedy: To relieve colds and chills, take a handful of fresh mint leaves, crush or tear them and add to boiling water, brew for five minutes and drink daily until you feel better.

Origin: Native to Asia and the Mediterranean region and now grown across the world.

History, myths and legends: Mint appears in every list of herbs passed down to us, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, medieval and American Colonial. The Romans used mint to aid digestion and as a mouth freshener.

Remedies: Mint eases stomach upset, helps calm the digestive tract, alleviates indigestion, intestinal gas and abdominal cramping. First herb of choice for colds and flu as it relieves multiple symptoms at once: congestion, headaches, muscle ache and nausea. It calms a sore throat and dry cough. It aids oral health, relieves nausea and congestion.
