My Spice Box

Barbara’s remedy

Barbara’s remedy: I have grown up with home remedies as my father was a pharmacist. My parents used sage and other herbs for remedies, as did we, my sisters and myself and I still use it now and so does my daughter. As a remedy, it is made up like tea. Put a few chopped sage leaves into boiling water and infuse, then strain off and add a little honey for taste. It is good for headaches, stomach upsets and colds.

Fahd’s remedy: For prostate and water retention problems. Boil a mug of water with a teaspoon of sage and a teaspoon of green tea leaves for five minutes, strain and drink.

Native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean.

History, myths and legends: From the Arabs and the Chinese to the Gypsies, all believed that sage was a sacred herb and the key to a long life.

Remedies: Relieves common cold, fever and sore throat. Improves digestion and relieves hot flushes and night sweats during menopause; and used for depression, memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease.

Please note: It is advisable to check with your Doctor before taking any home remedies
