Maltiben and Rushpa’s remedy

Maltiben’s remedy: Turmeric milk is a traditional cure for cold, cough and throat problems. Take half a cup of milk in a pan, add a half teaspoon of turmeric powder and a half teaspoon of ghee (clarified butter), a pinch of salt. Bring to boil, then let it cool slightly and drink it while still warm. Take daily until cured. .

Rushpa’s remedy: For sprains, take two to three teaspoons of turmeric powder, make a paste with warm water and a little lime juice. Place the paste on the sprain and hold in place with a bandage for a few days or until the swelling goes down.

Origin: Native to south Asia, by 800 AD turmeric had spread across much of Asia, including China, and across Africa.

History, myths and legends: For general protection from disease, carry turmeric root in your pocket, or tie it on a yellow silk thread around your neck. It was once a cure for jaundice.

Remedies: Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent and can be used as an effective disinfectant, internally and externally. The anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric can help treat both osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and cuts and sprains.
