My Spice Box

Raj and Parames’s remedy

Raj’s remedy: I am originally from Mauritius, we grew up with home remedies. Cumin has many health benefits, it contains vitamin E, making it good for the skin and hair. It is good for asthma, anaemia, immunity and cancer. For digestion, add half a teaspoon of cumin powder to a yoghurt drink and take after meals.

Parames’s remedy: As a blood purifier, add one teaspoon of cumin powder and two teaspoons of lemon juice, to a glass of warm water. Mix and drink this on an empty stomach.

Origin: Native to Egypt and cultivated in the Mediterranean region, especially Spain, France, Morocco and India. Cumin was used by the Egyptians in 2500 BC in the mummification process.

History, myths and legends: From the Roman author Pliny, we learn that the ancients took the ground seed medicinally with bread, water or wine. It was believed that a happy life awaited the bride and groom whom carried cumin seed throughout the wedding ceremony.

Remedies: Cumin is used as a diuretic; to relieve digestive problems; for nausea, morning sickness and bloating.

Please note: It is advisable to check with your Doctor before taking any home remedies
